Fresh Off the Press @ Le Marais, San Francisco

Former Aziza and Dandelion pastry chef, Phil Ogiela, sets up his own pattiserie, Le Marais, on the busy Chestnut Street in the city! The smaller space of this 2 month old pastry shop might not compare to the warehouse of Dandelion, but Chef Phil is concocting French pastries that will delight any sweet tooth strolling in the Marina district.

I was quite disappointed that some selections had no labels. The young lady behind the counter seemed like she was a trainee because she couldn't explain with confidence what the desserts were. So what's a food blogger supposed to do? I picked based on how pleasing the pastries looked to my eyes. The lemon meringue tart (bottom left) was a refreshing mid-day snack, while the chocolate brownie (bottom right) was too sweet for me (but it was really meant for my chocoholic nephew anyway).  I also took home a creamy slice of pound cake (was it the gateau basque?), which I enjoyed more than the lemon tart.

BTW, I was bummed that the cashier didn't give me a receipt even though I clicked on the "print receipt" on the POS tablet. I expect better trained employees on my next visit.

City insider tip: easy free parking at the tip of the Marina where all the boats are docked - 10 mins walking distance from the main drag of Chestnut St.
